Short CV Frank Philippin was born in Stuttgart in 1967. He lived in Rutesheim and did his high-school diploma (Abitur) at the Johhannes-Kepler-Gymnasium in Leonberg. His formative years were spent forming his own bands (die Gründer & Dasmango), working as a kind of amateur journalist for local magazines (Was Tun?! und Diesel 1) and rejecting to go to the army. After finishing school, 20 months of civil service and 5 years (1990–1994) of working as a self-trained graphic designer and art director in advertising agencies in Stuttgart (SL Design, Bläse Schott und Partner) and Hamburg (Schott Relations), Frank moved to London to study Graphic Design at Camberwell College of Arts (BA / 1994–1997) and Royal College of Art (MA / 1997–1999). In 1999 he was a research associate at the Helen Hamlyn Research Center (now: Helen Hamlyn Center for Design) in London for a year and also founded the design studio Brighten the Corners with the first office in Clapham, later Brixton. In 2001 his college friend Billy Kiosoglou joined as a partner. They are running the studio from London, Aschaffenburg (before that: Stuttgart, Odenwald) and Athens to this day and have worked, as a 2-men-show, for numerous clients including the Goethe-Institut, the Italian Cultural Institute, Steidl, Frieze, Vitra, Anish Kapoor and the Federal Ministry of Finance. They’ve won quite a few awards, including the Grand Prix at TDC Tokyo, Best German Book Design Stiftung Buchkunst, Yellow Pencil at D&AD, Gold Cube at ADC Global, Gold Nail at ADC Germany and Certificates of Typographic Excellence at the TDC New York. One of their work, the annual report for Austrian light company Zumtobel, was selected for the Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum in London in 2013. After having taught at Brighton University, Kingston University, Maidstone College of Art and Merz Akademie Stuttgart from 1998 to 2005 Frank became a Professor at the Faculty of Design in Darmstadt in 2006 where he is teaching to this day.
